Hillhouse helping young families and homeless

I’ve kept in touch with local charity Hillhouse during the five years I’ve been an MP. They do an incredible job supporting young mothers who need basic equipment and clothing for babies, as well as providing clothing for families in need. Income is derived from their retail outlets, and they have a team of dedicated volunteers helping.

Recently they have been making up starter packs for people who have been homeless and are moving in to their own homes. They have helped 3 times as many people in one year than they anticipated helping in the 18 months the project was funded for. Funding for that project is coming to an end, and there will be a huge gap to fill if replacement funding isn’t found. They would also like to expand the way they can help families across East Ayrshire by providing a mobile or pop-up service in local areas. However this can’t happen without access to transport, which is currently beyond the charity’s means.

I took my colleague from the Scottish Parliament, Kez Dugdale MSP along to meet staff and volunteers, so that she could hear first hand about the challenges they face.
